LEADERS SERVING BEAVER COUNTY'S OCTOBER 2016 WORKSHOP:

THE "CONTAGIOUS HUMILITY" OF THE PITTSBURGH STEELERS

Dr. Galbraith

"Contagious Humility" will be the topic of the next Leaders Serving Beaver County “Leader’s Workshop” featuring teaching by Dr. Diane Galbraith based on chapter 2 of the book Forged in Steel: The Seven Time-Tested Leadership Principles Practiced By the Pittsburgh Steelers. The breakfast workshop will be held on Thurs., Oct. 20, 2016 at the Lodge at Penn State Beaver campus.

Dr. Galbraith has been an associate professor at Slippery Rock University since 2003. She serves as the management lead in the university’s Business Department, teaching, coaching and advising traditional undergraduate and MBA students in a classroom setting. She also instructs on-line classes in a distance learning environment. She is a board member of the Valley Points YMCA.

Co-authored by Tunch Ilkin of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Damian Williams of Leadership League, Forged in Steel is a widely praised analysis of the Steelers way of leadership. Chapter 2, which explains why the Steelers are different from any other National Football League franchise, focuses on how humility can become contagious in your team, resulting in greater interdependence and teamwork.

Chapter 2 of the book focuses on how a leader's humility becomes contagious on her or his team, it results in greater interdependence and teamwork:

Ambassador Rooney inspires with values that flow from his heart, based on a deep faith, love of his family, knowledge of human motivation and understanding of the game. His core beliefs demonstrate “contagious humility” but do not need to be written on paper. He knows how to articulate them and how to live them day in and day out. And others watch him very closely and learn.

Why is Mr. Rooney such an effective leader? We asked that question of many in the Steelers organization, past and present, and discovered a simple truth. People trust him. Trust is the most important issue in leadership. Nothing moves without it.

For you as a leader, your top priority must be to earn the trust of subordinates, customers and third parties. This cannot be achieved with gimmicks, rah-rah speeches, glitzy advertising campaigns or even record-breaking sales. It can only be achieved through authentic behavior demonstrated consistently, every day, time after time. The highest levels of trust happen at the convergence of competence and character.

Objectives of the Workshop: As a result of this seven-month workshop, participants will:

1. Utilize transformative principles of leadership for personal, spiritual, and professional growth.
2. Strengthen abilities to establish more effective relationships within your sphere of influence.
3. Create a personalized plan to clearly identify purpose, values and a leadership perspective.

The workshop will be held at Penn State Beaver’s Lodge room on Thurs., Oct. 20, 2016, beginning at 7:30 a.m. and including a continental breakfast. To RSVP>>>
